Google’s Find My Device Will Ensure You’re Never Without Your Android Phone Again

Stay on target

We’ve all been there at one time or another. We’ve taken our phone out, absentmindedly set it down somewhere, and walked off with out it. Of course, the ensuing meltdown that happens after that is the most terrifying part of it all. Now, Google’s “Find My Device” option, which is essentially the Android version of “Find My iPhone,” supports the layouts of large indoor spaces, including malls, airports, stadiums, concert venues, and a selection of other areas you might be the most likely to leave your trusty phone.

Previously, the tracking app was released and allowed users to locate their lost phone, tablet, or smartwatch in normal areas, but it wasn’t specifically able to work with establishing a location inside large buildings. That’s all changed and improved now, and you can find your lost item as well as get it to play noise to lead you to it and remotely lock it – just in case, so no one else can get to it.

As long as you have GPS tracking enabled on your phone, you can make use of the app by logging into a device with your Google account and tracking it down. You’ll have to make sure you’ve turned on Android’s Location Services in the past, so if you don’t have it turned on and your phone gets lost in the mall bathroom because you had to set it down to take care of business, you may very well be out of luck. For everyone else, though, it should work perfectly, even if someone picks it up and walks off with it. Tough break for them.

With the holiday season gearing up and going into full swing, you’re more likely than ever to leave your phone somewhere while shopping, so if you’re an Android user, make sure you’ve got your GPS tracking on when you go out. Don’t give yourself a reason to use this feature and be careful, but know that it’s there for you too, just in case.
